Fort Pozzacchio is the last of the Austro-Hungarian fortresses built between the 19th and early 20th centuries on the Trentino border with the Kingdom of Italy. It is entirely carved into the rock and represented the most modern war machine of the Danubian monarchy. Construction of the fort began in 1913 and continued until the outbreak of war with Italy, but the work was never completed.
The restoration involved removing debris and securing the rooms.
The wooden huts planned in the caves are now evoked through metal flooring and the perimeter delimitation of some rooms. A metal staircase reaches the top of the fort where a walkway reproduces the corridor that would have connected the armored domes.
All interventions have been highlighted in orange, in memory of the construction site.
The intervention was awarded for the courage of the proposals, the intelligent use of materials, and the project's ability to make these structures accessible and usable while fully respecting their identity.
